Finally, Garret was kinda let go via a released statement on Monday and Mike McCartney was named as new Head Coach.
We all thought it would happen. Pero, there was still that uneasy feeling that you never really know with Jerry. In the end it turned into an episode of Seinfeld when George Constanza was going to work every day even though he had already been fired. Garret was going to work every day, perhaps out of habit since he had been part of the organization for over 20 years. As a player, assistant coach offensive O.C. and of course Head Coach. And his deceased dad had served as a scout for the organization. Maybe all of this contributed to the weirdness this past week.
“And, Mike McCartney is now the main man – or is he”?
But he is now he officially gone. And, Mike McCartney is now the main man – or is he? You would think that his resume would demand that. 13 seasons with the Packers, in the playoffs 9 of those years and of course something Jerry is drooling over – 1 Super Bowl Win. And he won it at Jerry World. Well, if you remember the last few coaches hired here Jerry had already assigned their assistant coaches. Pero, it appears that formula (losing) will not be applied to McCartney since it was reported that he has already hired New Orleans linebackers coach Mike Nolan as Defensive coordinator. It has also been reported he is also hiring a new Special teams’ coach, something they desperately need. So maybe, just maybe Jerry will stay out his way since he knows the other has not worked in the last 25 years.
When McCartney was formally introduced on Wednesday, I immediately was taken with the fact that McCartney did not sound like a robot. That itself had me immediately sold on him since I was so tired of Jason’s’ “…It is a process and you stack one good day on top of the other” talk. I was sick of that. I even heard from El Gato Negro after the press conference he said, “So glad ca el cabron de Jason (the A**Jason) is gone, now maybe I won’t’ have to use on another life waiting on a Super Bowl”.
Yes, Super Bowl talk has already started. Mike will have his work cut out for him. It is Super Bowl or bust, Jerry can’t wait much longer, and neither can most of us!
