The Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta Committee of Tarrant County is dedicated to promoting education, social justice, community involvement, and leadership. Their mission is inspired by the powerful spirit of “Si Se Puede” (“Yes, It Can Be Done”) demonstrated by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta.

Establishing a Local Holiday

In the spring of 2000, a small group of committed individuals in Tarrant County recognized the importance of honoring Cesar Chavez’s contributions to workers’ rights and social justice. They worked hard to establish a holiday in his name.  With the support of the community, their efforts paid off when the Tarrant County Commissioners Court unanimously approved the Cesar Chavez Holiday in September 2000. This holiday celebrates Chavez’s dedication to improving the lives of farm workers and promoting equality.

The first Cesar Chavez March and Rally took place in March 2021, bringing the community together to honor his legacy. Since then, the committee has continued to celebrate this holiday each year.

Recognizing Dolores Huerta’s Contributions

In 2014, the committee became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization called the Cesar Chavez Committee of Tarrant County. This change allowed them to expand their efforts in honoring Chavez’s work. Recognizing that Dolores Huerta played a crucial role in the fight for workers’ rights alongside Chavez, the committee updated its name to the Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta Committee of Tarrant County. Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers (UFW) with Chavez and was instrumental in advocating for fair treatment of farm workers.

Celebrating 25 Years of Advocacy

In 2025, the committee is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To mark this milestone, they are organizing a special event:

Event: Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta March

Birthday Celebration at Artes de la Rosa

After the march, the day’s events will continue with a Birthday Celebration at Artes de la Rosa. This celebration honors the birthdays of both Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta.

Why These Celebrations Matter

Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta dedicated their lives to improving the conditions of farm workers and advocating for civil rights. Their efforts led to significant changes, such as better wages and working conditions, and inspired many others to join the fight for equality.

Today, their work continues to influence social justice movements. By celebrating their legacies, we remember the importance of standing up for what’s right and supporting those who work hard to provide for their families.

How You Can Participate

The committee invites everyone to join in the march and birthday celebration. It’s a chance to honor the past, support ongoing efforts for justice, and build a brighter future together.

Whether you’re a student, a family, or a community group, your participation is valuable. Together, we can continue the work that Chavez and Huerta started and make a positive impact in our community.
