Estas dos semanas todos han estado hablando en Twitter acerca del nuevo docu-serie de Netflix: El Caso de Gabriel Fernández”. Yo siempre he estado interesada en series basadas en hechos reales, lo cual me llevó a ver este documental durante el fin de semana. 

Esta serie me dejó muy sorprendida y con muchas preguntas sobre la humanidad. Por lo general, este tipo de documentales basados en hechos reales, contienen imágenes muy fuertes que son difíciles de ver, pero este caso fue aún más delicado porque la víctima fue un niño. Gabriel Fernández tenía solo siete años cuando murió tras ser torturado y abusado por su propia madre y su padrastro, durante ocho meses. El abuso físico fue tanto que su cuerpo estaba lleno de moretones y marcas de pies a cabeza, lo cual demoró su autopsia dos días. Además de entrar en detalles acerca del abuso cometido por los padres, la serie también se enfoca en cómo el sistema jugó un papel principal en la muerte de Gabriel. El Departamento de Niños y Familias tenía un caso abierto de investigación a la familia del pequeño después de recibir varias llamadas y reportes de familiares y maestros por posible abuso, y aún así el niño no fue protegido. Si Gabriel hubiese sido enviado a un lugar de acogimiento para niños, en vez de mantenerlo junto a su madre, quien lo regaló desde que nació, estuviera vivo todavía. 

Honestamente, no creo que una serie me haya impactado de esta forma antes. No puedo entender cómo un ser humano puede ser capaz de hacer tanto daño a otro ser humano, pero sobre todo a un niño, y aún más siendo su propio hijo. Lo que más me sorprendió de todo, fue el poco esfuerzo de los trabajadores sociales para llevar a este niño a una casa hogar y mantenerlo a salvo cuando ellos sabían que era abusado. Este documental es triste pero es muy importante, pues le está creando conciencia a nuestra sociedad de que el abuso infantil existe y nos ayuda a reconocer sus señales con el propósito de salvar vidas.

These two weeks everyone has been talking on Twitter about the new Netflix docu-series, “The Case of Gabriel Fernandez.” I’ve always been interested in series that are based on real events, which led me to watch this documentary over the weekend. 

This series left me very surprised and with many questions about humanity. Usually, documentaries based on real events, contain very strong images that are very difficult to see, but in this case, it was even more difficult because the victim was a child. Gabriel Fernandez was only seven years old when he died after being tortured and abused, by his own mother and stepfather, for eight months. The physical abuse was so much that his body was full of bruises and marks from head to toe, which delayed his autopsy two days. In addition to going into details about the abuse committed by the parents, the series also focuses on how the justice system played a major role in Gabriel’s death. The Department of Children and Families had an open case of investigation to the child’s family after receiving several calls and reports from family members and teachers for possible abuse, and the child was still not protected. His mother gave him away when he was born, and still, he was sent to live with her instead of a children’s foster location. Perhaps if the DCF agency had done the right thing, Gabriel would still be alive.

 Honestly, I don’t think any series has impacted me like this before. I cannot understand how a human being is capable of doing so much harm to another human being, but especially to a child, and even more, his own child. What surprised me the most was the little effort of social workers to take this child to a home, and keep him safe when they knew he was being abused. This documentary is sad but very important because it is raising awareness in our society that child abuse exists and helps us recognize the signs for the purpose of saving lives.
