El 6 de septiembre de 2017, un huracán de categoría cinco pasó a través del Mar Caribe que destruyó todo a su paso. El huracán Irma causó daños por miles de millones de dólares en todas las islas.

Una de ellas que sufrió mayores daños fue Saint-Martin, la isla es mitad holandesa y mitad francesa. La isla de San Martin consiste de treinta y cuatro millas cuadradas y tiene una población de más de 70,000 personas. El presidente Emmanuel Macaron, de Francia, prometió que la isla se recuperaría rápidamente, pero como podemos ver ahora lo difícil que es regresar de un desastre tan grande como el huracán Irma que destruyó más del 90% de los edificios en St. Martin. 

Dos años después de Irma, aproximadamente solo se ha restaurado la mitad de la isla y los hoteles y restaurantes han sido reabiertos para que los turistas los visiten nuevamente. Aunque ha habido mucha reconstrucción, todavía hay edificios sin techo y las pequeñas empresas aún están cerradas. Al regresar nuevamente el turismo a la isla está ayudando a la economía local. El turismo es una de las mejores maneras de ayudar con la recuperación de lugares azotadas por desastres naturales. Eso es lo que está pasando en San Martín.

The Recovery of the Caribbean Islands

On September 6, 2017, a category five hurricane passed through the Caribbean Islandsdestroying everything in its path. This tropical cyclone that created sucha disaster was Hurricane Irma. The hurricane caused billions of dollars in damages throughout the island. One of the Caribbean Islands that was most affected by this disasterwas St. Martin Island, which is a half-Dutch and half-French. St. Martin is comprised of thirty-four-square-miles and has a population of over 70,000 inhabitants. President Emmanuel Macron of France promised that the island would recover quickly but what is evident nowisthat it has been very difficult to turnaround from such an immense disaster as was Hurricane Irma, which destroyed more than 90% of the buildings in St. Martin. 

After more than two years since Hurricane Irma hit the island, only half of the island has been restored,including some hotels and restaurants that have been re-opened for the tourist to visit again. Although there has been some recovery, there are still homelesspeople on the streets, many buildings without roofs and small businesses that remain closed. Luckily, tourism is starting to gain momentum again;the flow of tourists is bringing a much needed economy boom that is helping local businesses succeed and is helping with the on-going recovery that St. Martin isexperiencing.
