Ha terminado el año 2019 y con eso se acerca los anticipados Óscares que coronan las películas más espectaculares. Discutiremos en breve las nominaciones para este año y daré mi opinión sobre las decisiones de la academia y lo que significa para el estado de la industria.
Netflix
The Irishman, dirigido por Martin Scorsese, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, dirigido por Quentin Tarantino y 1917 que fue dirigida por Sam Méndes han recibido mucha adoración de los críticos. Cada una recibió diez nominaciones y competirán por mejor película del año. Cada una representa diferentes generaciones de Hollywood y el cambio que está pasando en la distribución de películas. The Irishman y Marriage Story, que fueron dirigidas por Noah Baumbach, fueron producidas por Netflix que últimamente ha producido filmes que compiten con los de los estudios tradicionales. Pero esta ceremonia sigue fuera de toque con el mundo moderno.
La academia ha recibido mucha crítica sobre su exclusión de gente de color y mujeres. Aunque la academia ha trabajado para ser más inclusiva, las nominaciones de este año dicen lo contrario. Greta Gerwig, que dirigió Little Woman, fue la más celebrada este año al recibir seis nominaciones… menos la categoría por mejor directora, donde no había ninguna mujer. Además, ninguna mujer de color fue nominada por mejor actriz: hasta ahora dicha categoría está dominada por actrices blancas.
Será interesante ver quiénes se van a llevar este premio en febrero porque estamos viendo el cambio de una industria que históricamente ha sido rígida. En la secuela del movimiento MeToo y la alienación de las minorías, las historias de estos grupos importan más que nunca. El cambio es un proceso lento, pero en un año donde había más mujeres y personas de color en la industria, los reconocimientos deberían reflejarlo.
The Anticipation

With the end of a decade, we await the anticipated 92nd Oscar awards that crown the most remarkable movies. This article will briefly discuss some nominations and my opinions on the academy’s selection and its impact.
Among the most praised movies among the nominations are The Irishman, directed by Martin Scorsese, Once upon a Time in Hollywood, directed by Quentin Tarantino, and, 1917, directed by Sam Mendes. Each film received ten nominations, and along with Joker, for Best Picture. These movies represent the different generations of filmmakers and the change we see in where we access movies. The Irishman and Marriage Story, directed by Noah Baumbach, were Netflix productions, which is producing films that compete with traditional film studios.
Although the academy has received criticism regarding their exclusion of people of color and women, this year’s nominations show the opposite. For example, Little Women’s director, Greta Gerwig, was 2019’s most celebrated female director. Yet, she was not nominated for best director, exemplifying that the Academy does not care about women. Movies like Hustlers, directed by Lorene Scafaria, was excluded. More women and people of color should also be reflected among the nominees since their presences are ever so present.
We are witnessing a change in industry that has been historically dominated by tradition. Movements, like MeToo, are highlighting that their stories matter more than ever. With the help of media, their voices are being heard more and more. It is a slow process, but one that has already started.
