October 15, 2024 — WEST Dallas, Texas
This past weekend, “Mujeres de Fuerza” hosted a highly successful cancer walk to raise awareness and support for individuals battling cancer. The event, held on a beautiful Saturday morning at Benito Juarez, Parque de heroes, saw over 200 participants, including survivors, family members, local businesses, and community leaders, all coming together for a common cause — to fight cancer and raise funds for programs to empower and educate our women and men to be their own advocates.

The walk, which stretched through the historical pocket neighborhood of Los Altos de Benito Juarez in West Dallas, was a powerful reminder of the strength and unity within the community. Participants of all ages showed up in colorful pink t-shirts, many wearing signs on their backs in honor or memory of loved ones affected by cancer. With each step, they contributed not only to raising awareness for women but also to a larger goal was raising awareness for men. Thanks to the participants and sponsors, Mujeres de Fuerza successfully accomplished the goal of community empowerment in bringing education and resources to an underserved community.
Speeches and Survivor Stories
Before the walk commenced, there was a touching opening ceremony. Pastor Linda Wilkerson, a breast cancer survivor herself, shared her story, bringing many to tears as they spoke about their battle with breast cancer and the importance of early detection for both women and men.
“Events like these remind us that no one fights alone, Pastor “Michael Enette, a male Breast Cancer Survivor said, addressing the crowd. “Your support gives hope to those who are struggling, and your participation today shows how powerful community can be when we come together for a common cause.”
Several other survivors also shared their stories, who emphasized the importance of cancer screenings and preventive healthcare, while medical professionals from local hospitals offered free information about early detection, healthy lifestyles, and available treatment options.
Community Engagement and Fun Activities
The event was more than just a walk. It featured a variety of activities for families and individuals of all ages. Kids enjoyed face painting, arts and crafts and while adults participated in a wellness fair with booths providing information about nutrition, fitness, and mental health. Local food vendors set up shop, donating a portion of their proceeds to the cause, and a DJ played upbeat music throughout the day, adding to the festive atmosphere.
One of the highlights of the day was a symbolic “Survivor Lap,” where cancer survivors led the crowd in the first lap around the course. This moving moment was met with cheers and applause from the crowd as everyone celebrated the strength and resilience of those who have faced the disease head-on.
A Growing Tradition
This year’s cancer walk marked the 2nd annual event hosted by Mujeres de Fuerza, and many of the participants said it was their most successful one yet. “Each year, the turnout gets bigger and the community’s support grows stronger,” said Mary Lou Paras, breast cancer survivor and founder of Mujeres de Fuerza.. “We’re so grateful to everyone who showed up, volunteered, and donated. Together, we’re making a difference.”
The event was also supported by local businesses, including Trinity Park Conservancy, the city of Dallas, and Rafael Tamayo from the Oak Cliff cultural center which provided in kind backing, donated supplies, and offered volunteers to help coordinate the walk. The event promoted the importance of regular check-ups and cancer screenings, encouraging participants to be proactive in their health care.
As the event came to a close, participants expressed hope that their efforts would lead to a future where fewer people have to face cancer alone. Many left inspired to continue advocating for cancer awareness and support, both locally and beyond.
Looking Ahead
Organizers already have their eyes set on next year’s cancer walk, hoping to build on the momentum of this year’s event. With community involvement, the walk continues to serve as a beacon of hope and action in the fight against cancer.
