En 1999, un miembro de la iglesia presbiteriana Trinity de Denton, y residente permanente legal, fue detenido y procesado para deportación. Como el área de Denton carecía de servicios legales de inmigración, los miembros de la iglesia unieron fuerzas para ayudar al congregante. Eventualmente, fue liberado y se naturalizó como ciudadano americano. Esta experiencia alarmante resaltó la importancia de tener servicios legales de inmigración en la comunidad local. Opening Doors ha ayudado a miles de clientes con sus casos de inmigración, incluyendo a personas de Latinoamérica, África y Asia. The American Dream in Denton: Non-Profit Organization Celebrates 20 Years of Service

In 1999, a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Denton, and a lawful permanent resident, was detained and processed for deportation. Since the city of Denton lacked immigration legal services, the church members united forces to help the member. Eventually, he was released and became a naturalized citizen of the United States. This experience highlighted the importance of offering immigration legal services in the local community. With this in mind, several church members completed courses required to become certified legal immigration councilors. Together, they founded Opening Doors International Services, Inc., and the U.S. Department of Justice recognized the agency in 2003.

Opening Doors has helped thousands of clients with their immigration cases, including people from Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The agency helps the community with family immigration petitions, such as applications for permanent residency and citizen naturalization. They also help submit applications and renewals for DACA, a program that offers protection from deportation for people who entered the country as children. Even though this program is in a legal limbo in the courts, Opening Doors continues to advise possible beneficiaries on all their legal immigration options.
The cost of a private immigration lawyer in Texas is approximately 297 dollars per hour (Clio). Opening Doors offers their services at a much lower cost thanks to grants and donation. Additionally, the accredited legal representatives, together with volunteers, help manage the organization’s operations.
“In its twentieth anniversary, [Opening Doors] continues to be the only non-profit legal immigration agency in Denton”, says executive director, Andrés Pacheco Sanfuentes. “We are proud to also contribute to the civic education of college students in Denton and the region. In fact, we have involved several students as volunteers, interns, and even entire classes that we are considering…adding this item to our mission”.
