Dolores Huerta Signing Petition For Fort Worth Street Name Change

Fort Worth, Texas has finally honored Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta with an honorary street named after both of the iconic civil rights activist. Alberto Govea of LULAC Council 4568 spearheaded the campaign to pay homage to Chavez and Huerta, and this was no easy task. Initially Support from community leaders for the initiative was slim to none, it sometimes seemed like some members of the Fort Worth City Council simply did not want it to happen.

Those who understood the importance of a street named after Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta never gave up. But what is so important about honoring community leaders by having a street named after them? Evalice Arguello a supporter and volunteer had an answer, “A street in their name brings their past work into the present and enables the community to experience their work in the present and far into the future, hopefully inspiring others to learn about their contributions and service. Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta streets in Fort Worth is a huge win not just for the Latino community but for everyone.” And thanks to volunteers, family, community leaders like Alberto Govea and City Councilman Carlos Flores, the conversation about the importance of caring for others and doing what is right will begin right in Fort Worth.

However, there is a disclaimer to this great honor the city has given Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. The Street name is just an honorary street topper on NE 28th St, so there is still work to be done to achieve a permanent street name change. But for now, the community can enjoy the honorary topper and hopefully kids and adults who don’t know who Chavez and Huerta is will now learn and be inspired by their love and care for the community.
