Las mujeres del siglo XXI han llegado a un nivel de libertad que era imposible hace dos décadas. Las mujeres modernas tienen la opción de educarse, casarse, crear una familia y lograr sus metas.

Sin embargo, lo cierto es que ellas siguen enfrentando las mismas adversidades y desafíos que sus antepasados. Incluso, estas opresiones no son un secreto. Algunas intelectuales, como Digna Ochoa, han ayudado a defender los derechos de las mujeres por los medios de comunicación. Las mujeres tienen apoyo universal contra la opresión, pero poco ha cambiado a través de los años. 

En varios países latinoamericanos se han desarrollado manifestaciones nacionales contra la violencia de las mujeres. El Día Internacional de la Mujer (8 de marzo) produjo manifestaciones diversas contra la violencia, injusticia y desigualdad de las mujeres en nuestra sociedad. Estas manifestaciones se expandieron desde México hasta Argentina. Cartelones con las palabras “México Feminicidio”, en Brasil “abajo el genocidio”, y en Argentina “La deuda es con nosotras.” Palabras que siguen siendo parte de las conversaciones de nuestra sociedad. Las mujeres viven con miedo de ser asesinadas por sus padres, hermanos, amigos o parejas. La vida de una mujer es vista menos valiosa ante los ojos de un hombre. Este hecho es uno de los varios motivos de las defensoras de los derechos de las mujeres.

La batalla contra la desigualdad y opresión de las mujeres sigue. Ellas tienen la educación y la fuerza para defenderse, pero la meta es no tener que defenderse constantemente sino obtener los mismos derechos que los hombres. Ellas viven en terror de perder sus vidas y las metas que sueñan tener. Ellas siguen suplicando a los gobiernos que las apoyen en estas batallas. La justicia e igualdad entre los géneros sigue siendo un camino largo. Lo claro es que las mujeres no se cansaran de pelear por lo que es justo para ellas. Las manifestaciones y reformas seguirán hasta que las mujeres del futuro vivan en un mundo mejor que el de antes.

Women of the 21st century have reached a level of freedom that was almost impossible two decades ago. Today’s women have the option to get educated, get married, start a family and much more.

However, women today continue to face the same adversity and challenges that their foremothers had faced. Indeed, these oppressions aren’t a secret. Female intellectuals like Digna Ochoa have helped to defend women’s rights through mass media. Women have universal support against oppression, but little has changed through the years. 

In several Latin American countries, national protests against the violence of women have emerged. International Women’s Day (March 8th) produced diverse protests against the violence, injustice, and inequality of women in our society. These protests spread from Mexico to Argentina. Huge signs with the words “Mexico Femicide,” in Brazil “Down with genocide,” and in Argentina “The debt is with us.” Words that continue to be part of the conversations of our society. Women live in fear of being killed by their fathers, brothers, friends, or partners. The life of a woman is seen as less valuable through the eyes of a man. This fact is one of the various motives for the defenders of women’s rights. 

The fight against the inequality and oppression of women continues. Women have the education and strength to defend themselves, but the goal is to not have to constantly defend themselves. Women should obtain the same rights that men have. They live in terror of losing their lives and their lives that they dream to have. They continue to plead for their governments to support them in these fights. The path to justice and gender equality continues to be a long way away. One thing that is clear is that women will not tire of fighting for what is fair for them. Protests and reforms will remain until the future women of the country live in a world better than yesterdays.
