Soul se estrenó el 25 de diciembre 2020 en el servicio de Disney Plus. Es unas de las primeras películas de Disney que estrena solamente en línea, esforzándose por adaptarse a las restricciones y al cierre de teatros a causa de la pandemia del COVID 19.

Soul fue dirigida por Pete Docter -que también dirigió las películas Upy Inside Out-. Esta película plantea la gran pregunta “¿cuál es el propósito de nuestra vida?” y concluye con la respuesta que el propósito es simplemente vivir la vida y apreciar los momentos pequeños. 

El protagonista, ‘Joe’, es afroamericano y su pasión es tocar música jazz profesionalmente pero solamente es un maestro de música para estudiantes en la secundaria. Luego tiene una experiencia cercana a la muerte que lo lleva a un lugar donde las almas pertenecen entre la vida y la muerte. Allí, Joe conoce al alma por nacer, ‘22’. Durante sus adversidades,  los dos encuentran el propósito de la vida y Joe gana otra oportunidad de vivir. 

            La animación de esta película es espectacular por los usos de luz, detalle y atención de imitar el mundo real de la ciudad de Nueva York. También da representación a la comunidad afroamericano sin hacer referencias a estereotipos. Los temas en esta película están enfocados a los adultos y casi no llama la atención de niños porque son temas que estos no comprenden hasta que maduran. La película podría ser mas sentimental y memorable si Joe tuviera una canción que lo siga durante la película -como la canción de Carl and Ellie en Up–.

Considerando que su pasión es el Jazz, le faltó una canción que conectara lu relación con su padre o su propia vida para evocar más sentimiento a la audiencia.

            El mensaje de esta película es muy importante de reconocer, especialmente después del año que fue 2020.

Soul: The Most Adult Movie from Pixar

Soul premiered on the 25th of December of 2020 on the Disney Plus streaming service. It is one of the first Disney films that has only been released online in an effort to adapt to the restrictions and closing of movie theaters due to the COVID pandemic. 

Soul was directed by Pete Docter, who also directed the films Up and Inside Out. This film focuses on the big question, “What is the purpose of our life?” and it concludes with the answer that the purpose is to simply live life and to appreciate the little moments as well. The protagonist ‘Joe’ is African American and his passion is to play jazz music professionally but, he is only a music teacher for students in middle school. He has a near death experience that brings him down to a place where souls stay between life and death. There, Joe meets an unborn soul called ‘22’. During adversity, the two find life’s purpose and Joe gains another chance to live his life. 

The animation in this film is spectacular for its use of light, detail, and attention to imitate the real world of New York City. It also presents the African American community without referencing to stereotypes. The themes in this film are catered towards adults and not so much to grab the attention of children because there are ideas that they do not understand until they are mature. 

This film could be more sentimental and memorable if Joe had a song that follows him throughout the movie, just like Carl and Ellie’s song in Up. Considering that his passion is Jazz, he was missing a song that connected his relationship with his father or his own life to evoke more emotions to the audience. 

The message of this film is particularly important to recognize, especially after the difficult year that was 2020.
