Have you ever thought about how we can help displaced people? We read, hear, and see intense conversations about the subject of immigration. Aside from the news, we should worry about the well-being of asylum seekers. It is a topic that should be considered as it is a topic of humanity, and not politics. There are things we can do to help at a personal level in our community and in the university.

First, we can help at a personal level in a way that moves peoples’ awareness regarding unaccompanied minors. According to the department of health and human services, from January 27th, 2023 there are 7,565 unaccompanied minors in their care. If you want to help, you can visit the website LIRS.org/about for more information. This organization helps unaccompanied minors now that “…, we resettle refugees, reunite children with their parents, and reignite the American dream.” (Fact Sheets and Data). There are opportunities to help in the form of being a pen pal or being a host family, to name a few.

As a student, you can try to persuade your university to participate in a program called “Every Campus a Refugee”. According to the organization’s website, “A campus is a small city capable of playing an important role in alleviating the refugee crisis.” In this program, the university works with a local organization of refugee resettlement. The goal is for the university to agree to support a family for ninety days so that they can save money to use when they no longer receive financial aid. According to the data, there is not even one university in Texas that participates in this program. Visit everycampusarefuge.net/getting-started/ for more information. Juntos podemos hacer una diferencia para los refugiados

¿Había usted pensado en cómo podría ayudar a la gente desplazada? Leemos, oímos y vemos conversaciones intensas sobre el asunto de inmigración. Aparte de las noticias, debemos preocuparnos por el bienestar de los asilados. Es un asunto que se debe considerar porque es un asunto de humanidad y no político. Hay salidas que podemos hacer para ayudar al nivel personal, en nuestra comunidad y en la universidad.

Primeramente, podemos ayudar personalmente, a modo de generar conciencia, a los menores sin compañía. Según el Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos, a partir del 27 de enero 2023 hay 7.565 menores no acompañados a su cuidado. Esta organización ayuda a los menores sin acompañar ya que “…reasentamos a los refugiados, reunimos los niños con sus padres y encender de nuevo el sueño americano.” (Fact Sheets and Data). Hay oportunidades para ayudar en la forma de ser un amigo por correspondencia o de ser una familia de acogida para nombrar algunas.

Como estudiantes, podemos tratar de convencer a la universidad que participe en un programa que se llama “Every Campus a Refugee”. De acuerdo con el sitio de la organización “un campus de […] universidad es una pequeña ciudad capaz de desempeñar un papel importante en el alivio de la crisis de refugiados.” En este programa la universidad trabaja con una organización local de reasentamiento de refugiados. La meta es que la universidad acceda a apoyar a una familia por noventa días para que puedan ahorrar dinero para usar cuando ya no reciben ayuda monetaria (del gobierno). Según sus datos, no hay ninguna universidad de Texas que participe en este programa.
