Casi 200,000 migrantes venezolanos llegaron a las ciudades fronterizas en 2022, creando áreas subdesarrolladas llenas con tiendas de campaña. Algunas de estas personas se han enfermado debido a la sobrepoblación y la falta de baños o medidas sanitarias. También, hay mucha violencia en esas áreas debido al estrés y la falta de documentación sobre los migrantes.
Los funcionarios mexicanos recibieron la orden de comenzar a limpiar los campamentos por parte de sus funcionarios estatales y la Guardia Nacional. Ordenaron a todos que empacaran sus pertenencias rápidamente, dándoles a la gente menos de dos horas para irse. Farewell, Little Venezuela
Recently, the United States’ Supreme Court ruled to extend a health policy that closes the border to many immigrants who are waiting to request political asylum. After Joe Biden won the US election, many Venezuelans came to stay at camps established on Mexican borders. Those campsites have been named “Little Venezuela”. After the Supreme Court’s ruling, the Mexican government has tried to rapidly ward off the people in these camps. Some of them been offered to move them to shelters near the border or send them back to their country for free. However, this forced movement is still causing trauma.
Venezuelans were hoping that after Biden won the election, he would allow more refugees to come into the US. Almost 200,000 Venezuelan immigrants arrived in cities near the Mexican borders in 2022, creating underdeveloped camp areas. There, the people have gotten sick due to the overpopulation and the lack of bathrooms and sanitary resources. There is also a lot of violence due to the stress and having no formal registration of all the immigrants in the areas.
State Officials ordered Mexican police and National Guard to clean out the camps. They told everyone to pack their belongings quickly and were only given 2 hours at most to do so. After the refugees left, any belongings that were left behind were gathered and destroyed. Many were separated from friends and belongings of sentimental value which they could not gather on time. Venezuelan refugees watched how their tents were destroyed as they were forced out of the camps.
Mexican government officials offered places in local shelters far from the border. This did not please some of the refugees because it does not compare to the tent home that were destroyed. For many, shelters are more dangerous than the border tent camps due to government control and corruption. Many felt in despair as they don’t have anywhere to go and it was not safe for them to return to Venezuela.
To conclude, it is important to know how the decision of the United States Supreme Court caused these effects on the Mexican border camps. It is important to show concern for the people of little Venezuela that were left traumatized by the clearing of their provisional homes. The refugee camps of the Mexican government were not an actual replacement for what they lost in little Venezuela. In the future, the United States should permit more refugees to cross into the nation. Mexico should have areas that allow Venezuelans to construct communities instead of forcing them to live in shelters.
